Dental Implant FAQ
Mason, OH

An example of a dental implant at Fox Dental Excellence in Mason, OH.You likely have heard about dental implants, but you may not be sure how they are made, if dental implants are safe, and why, or if, you should get these dental restorations. Dental implants are, after all, a permanent tooth replacement option. If you are considering dental implants, Fox Dental Excellence is here for you. We offer dental implant surgery as one of our many restorative dentistry options.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant consists of a titanium post that is created and designed to replace missing teeth. The post is inserted in your jaw bone. This process, called osseointegration, can take several months. Once that has healed, a post, also referred to as the abutment, will be placed on top of the implant. Lastly, a dental crown will be put on top of the abutment to finalize the dental implant.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

Dental implants have many benefits. Some of these benefits include:
•  Dental implants are a permanent tooth restoration option
•  The success rate of dental implants is 98%
•  There is no special care required with dental implants - just your regular oral hygiene routine of daily brushing and flossing
•  Dental implants do not require any special cleansers, tools, or cleaning regimens
•  Because dental implants are permanent in your mouth, they will not shift or move around like dentures can
•  Dental implants resemble and act like your natural teeth
•  You can eat and drink whatever you like with dental implants; there are no restrictions

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

The good news is, most people are good and viable candidates for receiving dental implants. People opting for dental implant surgery should:
•  Have a fully formed jaw - you cannot get dental implants unless you have a fully grown jaw, otherwise the implant will fail. This means being an adult, children and teenagers are not yet candidates.
•  Be in good oral, as well as overall, health. Be sure to let the dentist know of any medications you are taking or any medical conditions you may have, even if they do not seem applicable or dental related.
•  Not have any prior medical conditions, as this could prevent you from being a candidate for dental implants. People with diabetes and heart conditions should seek the advice of their doctor and dentist before seeking dental implant placement. It may not be safe to undergo oral surgery if you have any prior medical conditions. Some medical conditions also slow the healing process that is required and needed after implant placement.
